Fire Hits Maiduguri Market, Zulum Promises 1 Billion Naira Relief For The Victims

On February 26, tragedy hit Maiduguri as a fire ravaged major portions of the well-known Monday Market, the biggest market in Borno State.

In his Sunday morning tour of the blazing market, Governor Babagana Umara Zulum declared a 1 billion relief for the victims and pledged to visit President Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) right away for more relief. He also asked humanitarian organizations to assist the victims.

Eyewitnesses told The PUNCH that the fire began between 2:30 am and 3 am, albeit the exact time of its genesis was unknown at the time.

Hundreds of vendors were scurrying away from their stores with whatever goods they could rescue in case the fire spread, as The PUNCH travelled around different areas of the market.

Abubakar Isa, a trader in used clothing, sobbed and told The PUNCH, "I lost everything in my five businesses. I cannot quickly quantify the worth of my losses, but I can tell you that it is over N30 million.
