In a bid to practice good oral hygiene, we have all come to appreciate the importance of brushing our teeth at least twice a day i.e morning and before bed. However, while this practice goes a long way to ensure that we don't fall short of this requirement, we often see some traces of blood as we spit out the mixture of our saliva and the toothpaste we used to brush. Well, it is a common occurrence that is known to affect virtually a lot of people and it is collectively treated under a general named called "bleeding gums".

Bleeding gums are usually the prime suspect in cases of gum disease and they can be indicative of other health challenges. It is quite normal for a person to experience occasional bleeding of the gums when they apply too much pressure when brushing their teeth or wearing dentures that do not fit them perfectly. Other factors apart from brushing too vigorously which could lead to occasional bleeding from the gums include injury, pregnancy, and inflammation.

However, if such occasional bleeding of the gum turns frequent, it may be indicative of more serious medical conditions. Some of the likely medical conditions that could cause bleeding gums include:
1. Periodontitis - this refers to an advanced form of gum disease in which the tissue and bone that support the teeth are damaged.
2. Leukemia - this simply refers to cancer of the blood.
3. Vitamin deficiency - you may be experiencing bleeding gums if your body is short on some of its vitamin requirements, especially vitamins C and K.
4. Thrombocytopenia or lack of clotting cells (platelets) - this occurs when you don't have enough platelets in your blood, thus making it hard for your body to control bleeding especially when you have wounds.
5. Type 1 or type 2 diabetes - seeing traces of blood while brushing your teeth may also be a warning sign that you could be having abnormally high blood sugar levels.
However, for people whose bleeding gums are due to vitamin deficiencies, increasing the consumption of certain foods can help to address the problem. Two vitamins whose deficiencies are particularly capable of causing bleeding gums are vitamin C and Vitamin K. Increasing your intake of vitamin C would help to make your immune system stronger and fight off the gum infections that can lead to bleeding gums. Vitamin K on the other hand may help to reduce the severity of your bleeding gums by stimulating clot formation whenever you bleed.
With that in mind, below are some foods that are known to help reduce the severity of bleeding gums in people:
