According to Manchester City's Kyle Walker, the turning point in their season came during their Carabao Cup victory over Liverpool in December, which ignited their remarkable run.
After the World Cup break, Pep Guardiola's squad returned to domestic action, engaging in a fierce battle against their rivals at the Etihad. Both teams were unable to field their full-strength lineups due to players recuperating from their international commitments in Qatar.
The decisive goal came from Nathan Ake, propelling City to a 3-2 victory. Following this success, the team embarked on an impressive run, securing 18 wins out of 22 Premier League matches.
In an interview with Sky Sports, Walker highlighted the significance of the Carabao Cup win, stating, "I said it last night on the City podcast, I thought coming back from the World Cup and we beat Liverpool here [in the Carabao Cup], I thought that was a stamp that a lot of the lads was missing. Many of the lads obviously went to the World Cup, and the manager had been working with the players that were here, and we ground out a result against Liverpool, which is a top team."
Confidence grew within the team following that victory, with Walker adding, "I think from then on we always believed we could do it. We went to Leeds, which is a tough place, and ground out a result there, and it’s just carried on from there. This group of lads is second to none - professionals and winners - that’s how we get across the line more times than not."
Looking ahead, Walker emphasized that City's journey is far from over, with crucial challenges awaiting them. He expressed, "Rest assured, we’re not finished. We’ve got the FA Cup against our bitter rivals, Manchester United, and then we’ve got the Champions League Final on the 10th of June.
Listen, we’ll enjoy it today, we’ll finally have a few glasses of champagne tonight, but then we move on to the 3rd of June, which is the big one, and hopefully create a great history for this football club."
