Inibehe Effiong, a well-known Nigerian human rights lawyer and public affairs commentator, has taken a swipe at the name on the official Twitter account of the "Department of State Services (DSS)."
His reaction comes shortly after the Department of State Services (DSS), via an official statement signed by its Public Relations Officer (PRO), Mr. Peter Afunanya, PhD, officially unveiled the social media handles of the agency in a bid to limit the spread of fake information linked to the agency and to enhance public and stakeholder engagements.
Reacting to the tweet on the official timeline of the security agency, Mr. Inibehe Effiong berated the agency for using "Department of State Services (DSS)" on Twitter instead of "State Security Service (SSS)," which he claimed was the original name constitutionally given to the agency.
He wrote, "Welcome to Twitter, can you explain why you prefer to go by "Department of State Services (DSS)" instead of the State Security Service (SSS) as created by law?" There’s no legal backing for the name "DSS." It does not exist in law. "We hope your presence isn’t to censor free speech."
What's your take on this?
