Osteonecrosis is the other name for avascular necrosis, but it is a bit distinctive in form, but similar treatment is required. It is a form of ischemic bone injury that leads to a severe joint disease that is degenerative with multifocal joint involvement and affects thirty percent 30% of people with sickle cell disease.
Osteonecrosis is a major complication of sickle cell disease, it arises when rigid, stiff, and abnormally shaped red blood cells, that are adherent continuously constrict the flow of blood to susceptible articular areas or surfaces.

The form of osteonecrosis in children especially infants is osteonecrosis of the femoral head ONFH, and an approximated percent of (50) fifty adults will develop osteonecrosis at age (35) thirty – five. The bones are repeatedly changed as the skeletal system makes new bone tissue to replace old, and aging bone tissue, because the old, and aging bones would expectedly break down and die. Osteonecrosis is caused medically by the presence of hemoglobin sickle cell gene ‘S’, also a disorder called osteoporosis. Motion range limit, limping in hips or knees, increase in pain, and stiff joints, difficulty in walking, standing, or climbing stairs, intermittent pain when there is applied pressure; these are the symptoms found in sickle cell patients having osteonecrosis.

It is detected by carrying out a physical exam using the x-ray machinery that shows a clear picture of the bones in the body and is capable of detecting fractures and signs of arthritis. The Magnetic Resonance Imaging MRI is also a physical exam that detects bone malfunction and disorder.
