The Army rescues Cross River commissioner from kidnappers

The Army said it had rescued Cross River Women's Commissioner Gertrude Nyar from the kidnappers' hideout. This was announced by the official representative of the Army Dorcas Aluko.

Aluko said Nyar was abducted on February 1 in the Main Avenue area of South Calabar.

An Army spokesman said the military acted on information about the victims' whereabouts and launched covert ambushes for the kidnappers around Jebs, Messembe, and Peter Effiong Creek.

"Brave soldiers tactically ambush the hijackers while they search for their victims," said Aluko. In the hand-to-hand combat that ensued, the perpetrators abandoned their victims and fled into a stream.

Aluko said the military was after the fleeing criminals.

An Army spokesperson said Nyar is currently receiving treatment and will be discharged at a later date.

“The commander of the 13th Brigade, Nigerian Army, thanks the brave unit and urges them to keep pace against all criminal elements in the brigade's area of responsibility.

"We also encourage the general public to continue to provide timely and accurate information about criminal activity in the surrounding area."
