As we age, our bodies and faces inevitably alter. Yet, some people may find that their appearance is skewed toward their chronological age due to their own habits or external circumstances. While though genetics surely play a role in how we age, there are many circumstances that might make someone appear older than they actually are.
According to WebMD, the following seven behaviors might make a person look older than they are:
1. Sleep deprivation, which can lead to tired, old-looking dark circles under the eyes. Maintaining a youthful appearance requires getting between 7 and 9 hours of sleep nightly.
2. A diet high in sugar and processed foods has been shown to hasten the aging process. Yet, a diet rich in fresh produce and entire grains can help you keep your skin looking fresh and healthy.
Third, tobacco use has been linked to accelerated skin aging and premature wrinkle formation. You may always improve your skin's condition and quality by giving up cigarettes.
Fourth, time spent outdoors without adequate sun protection can lead to premature aging signs like wrinkles and sagging skin due to the sun's damaging ultraviolet radiation. Be sure to use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 on cloudy days.
5. Not getting enough water: dry, dull skin is a sign of aging, and so is not getting enough water. Drinking at least eight glasses of water daily will help your skin stay hydrated and looking young.
6. Inactivity; exercise helps maintain a youthful appearance in the skin by increasing blood flow and decreasing stress. Doing at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise daily will help your skin stay healthy and radiant.
The release of the hormone cortisol, which has been linked to premature skin aging, is increased by chronic stress. Look into stress-relieving activities like yoga, meditation, or exercise.
Even though getting older is unavoidable, there are steps you can take to keep your skin appearing fresh and youthful. If you want to avoid looking older than you are, you can help by following a few simple preventative measures, such as getting enough sleep, eating a healthy diet, protecting your skin from the sun, drinking plenty of water, working out frequently, managing your stress, sticking to a skincare routine, caring for your teeth, and maintaining excellent posture.
