Politicians and those who participated in undermining the just finished Nigerian elections in 2023 are subject to visa restrictions from the United States US government.

The US has pledged to help Nigeria' s efforts to strengthen the democratic system and the rule of law, according to Secretary of State Anthony Blinken in a statement on Monday.

The victims of the visa restrictions, however, were not named by Blinken. Blinken said in a tweet on Monday: " We have imposed visa restrictions on specific individuals who undermined the democratic process during Nigeria' s 2023 elections.

" We remain committed to supporting Nigerian aspirations to strengthen democracy and rule of law. "

According to him, the visa limitations " are specific to certain individuals and are not directed at the Nigerian people or the government of Nigeria as a whole" .

Blinken used Section 212(a)(3)C) of the Immigration and Nationality Act to indicate that these people would be subject to limits on visas to the United States under a policy addressing those thought to be responsible for, or complicit in, undermining democracy.

But the US government made no mention of any of the people or groups of people thought to have tainted Nigeria' s elections in 2023.

" These individuals have been involved in the intimidation of voters through threats and physical violence, the manipulation of vote results, and other activity that undermines Nigeria' s democratic process, " Blinken added.

The US government' s decision, claims the statement underscores the nation' s ongoing commitment to supporting Nigeria' s efforts to build democracy and the rule of law.
