Liverpool fans can rejoice as their team is being tipped to win the race for the highly coveted young talent, Jude Bellingham. The midfielder has been a standout player for Borussia Dortmund this season and has attracted interest from several top European clubs, including Real Madrid.
Earlier this week, a report emerged claiming that Dortmund's asking price for Bellingham would be a 'minimum' of £110 million. However, pundits are divided on whether Liverpool can secure the teenager's signature and whether playing in the Champions League is a deciding factor for him.
Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand believes that Bellingham will choose Real Madrid over Liverpool if the Reds fail to qualify for the Champions League. "As a player, you look at it coldly and go, 'I see more trophies here,'" Ferdinand told BT Sport.
However, Arsenal legend Paul Merson disagrees with Ferdinand's prediction, stating that Bellingham's focus is on playing football rather than just winning trophies. "He’s not an egotistical player, and my feeling is he likes the challenge," Merson wrote for The Daily Star.
Merson went on to say that playing in the Champions League is not the be-all and end-all for the 19-year-old, citing Bellingham's decision to join Borussia Dortmund over Manchester United. "One year out of the Champions League at 19 isn’t going to define his career if Liverpool miss out on the fourth," Merson added.
Liverpool's current position in the Premier League does not bode well for their chances of qualifying for the Champions League next season. However, they still have a game in hand and could close the six-point gap with fourth-placed Tottenham Hotspur.
If Liverpool can secure Bellingham's signature, it would be a significant coup for the club. The midfielder has been one of Dortmund's standout players this season, and at just 19 years old, he has a bright future ahead of him.
As for the transfer race, time will tell which club will emerge victorious. But one thing is for sure: Liverpool fans will be hoping that their team can secure Bellingham's services and prove Rio Ferdinand wrong in the process.
