Obiageli Ezekwesili, a former Minister of Education, responded to Bola Tinubu, the president-elect, rejecting the Peoples Democratic Party's (PDP) and Atiku Abubakar's request for a live broadcast of the election petition tribunal proceedings.
According to reports, Tinubu's attorneys had pleaded with the tribunal to reject the petition because it was an insult to the court's honour.
The court "is not a rostrum or a soapbox," they insisted. It is not also a theatre or a stadium. It's not a place to enjoy 'public' entertainment.
The respondents claimed that the court of law should always remain what is expected of it, which in their opinion is an institution and place that is calm, disciplined, holy, tranquil, honourable, and decorous.
Ezekwesili responded on Twitter by asserting that people who are against the live broadcast are opposed to transparency.
She argued that the judiciary should not be an exception if the executive and legislative branches conduct live broadcasts.
Her tweet read, “The thing about televised court proceedings is that those who vehemently oppose it are likely to also be opponents of transparency in overall governance. These are folks who thrive in opaqueness.
“If the Executive and Legislature do live broadcast, so also can the Judiciary.”
