Dr. Joseph Odey Ogabor was awarded the best referee of the year, in the just concluded Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) awards, which held at Eko hotels, Lagos, on Monday September 20. One exciting profile the referee has acquired that may come as a surprise to many is that, he is a Ph.D holder and he is also a lecturer in the University of Calabar.
The referee obtained his B.Sc. in Physical and Health Education from the University of Calabar in 2006, after which he went ahead to earn his M.Ed degree in Exercise Physiology in 2014. He later took up teaching appointment with the University of Calabar in 2013 as a graduate assistant and was later upgraded to the rank of Assistant Lecturer in 2014, after completing his M.Ed programme.
In 2018, he was banned for one year, by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), for an attempted match manipulation with respect to the first leg match between Plateau United and USM Alger (an Algeria club) on April 7 2018, in Lagos.
