[Opinion] How The Southern Region Could Secure The 2023 Presidency Through Goodluck Jonathan

It is no longer news that the South and Northern regions of Nigeria, are at loggerheads over where the next President should be elected from. Amid this debate, there have been heightened rumours about a plot by some members of the All Progressives Congress (APC), to bring the country’s immediate past President, Goodluck Jonathan, into the party.

The rumour has continued to wax stronger on a daily basis. Although many people have their reservations about the alleged potential return of Goodluck Jonathan, who was voted out of office in 2015, there is the likelihood that the Southern region could use him to secure the 2023 Presidency. It should be recalled that some Northerners have argued that the region has four more years to rule before power could be returned to the South.

At the same time, the intention of the Northern region to retain power after the 8 years of President Buhari, is one thing that many people have argued, could further divide the country. With this, one may not be wrong to think that the two regions could enter into a dialogue where the issue of zoning of the 2023 Presidency to a particular region would be resolved.

Arguably, considering that since 1999, the Southern region has ruled the country 4 years more than the North, the latter (North) could oppose the idea of having a Southern Presidency for 8 years before power is returned to the region. At the same time, the South could also oppose the idea of having another Northern president for 8 more years before power is returned to the South.

With this in mind, there are chances that the two regions could settle for Goodluck Jonathan, with the aim of having the Presidency returned to the North after 4 years. Considering that Jonathan can only rule the country again for only 4 years, and that the 4 years would make up for the difference between the number of years ruled by each region when the North takes over again for 8 years, there is the likelihood that the two regions could be able to reach an agreement on this.

Arguably, this could be the Southern region’s last hope of securing the 2023 Presidency, particularly now that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has resolved to zone its chairmanship position to the Southern region (source: Vanguard News). This implies that the party’s presidential ticket for the 2023 election would go to the Northern region.
