The opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP had its National Executive Council (NEC) meeting yesterday in Abuja.
The meeting was to make final decisions on the party's zoning ahead of its national convention. To underscore the importance of that NEC meeting, the acting National Chairman of PDP, Elder Yemi Akinwonmi, described it as a ''make or mar'' meeting. At last, it held. Many Nigerians expected that the party will run into crisis resulting from disagreement, but that did not happen. It was because of a wise move make by some key persons in the party.

Wise tactic used by Wike and other Governors
While many people felt that Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State and other Governors that back the same decision with him will kick against some things during the meeting, they did something different. Yes, Wike, Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, Governor Udom Emmanuel of Akwa Ibom State, Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State had openly backed the idea that North should produce the PDP National Chairman and that will pave way for the South to get the party's presidential ticket.

But, it was revealed that before yesterday's meeting, Wike and other Governors met key leaders of PDP from the North and convinced them that the issue of zoning non-party posts should not be discussed at the NEC yesterday. According to a report by The Punch, this move by the PDP Governors was to avoid disagreement from breaking out. They proposed that the NEC should just adopt the swapping of positions between North and South as recommended by the Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi led party zoning committee. They also suggested that the issue of zoning Executive and legislative posts (non-party posts) which is being handled by the Governor Bala Mohammed led committee would be discussed on a different day. This was accepted. With that, the PDP NEC held peacefully.

How this may favour Wike and his camp later
One, PDP has a rule that the National Chairman and the presidential candidate will not come from the same region. In this case, if the National Chairman is from the North, the presidential candidate should come from the South. Wike and his allies will use this point to their advantage since the North already got the National Chairman post zoned to it.

Also, since the PDP swapped position between North and South, Wike and his camp will argue that it should also be done in the case of presidential candidate too. After all, in 2019, the PDP presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar came from the North. So, the next person should come from the South in line with the swap.

Moreover, PDP has more firm hold in the South than in the North currently. It is wiser to give the presidential ticket to a region where the party has more support base that can help it win the election. Wike and his camp can use this point to argue in their favour. Above all, this is happening at a time that many Nigerians believe that power should shift to the South since President Muhammadu Buhari from the North would be completing his eight years in power in 2023. This factor will favour Wike and his camp too.
