A internal crisis appears to be unfolding within the All Progressives Congress (APC), as the National Secretary of the party, Iyiola Omisore, has accused the North- West Vice Chairman, Salihu Lukman, of libel and demanded payment of N500 million for damages. The cause of the crisis can be traced back to comments made by Lukman, who called for Omisore' s resignation, citing his election to the position as causing problems in the Osun chapter of the APC.
Furthermore, Lukman also suggested that the national chairman of the party, Abdullahi Adamu, be replaced with a Christian to assuage the Muslim- Muslim presidency of Bola Tinubu.
Omisore's lawyer, Gboyega Oyewole (SAN), in a letter addressed to Lukman, stated that his comments were false and aimed at maligning his character. The letter demanded a retraction of the libelous statement and an apology to be published in two major newspapers and several online news outlets, as well as the payment of N500 million as damages for malicious statements made against Omisore.
The letter also warned Lukman that if he fails to heed the request of their client within 48 hours of receiving the letter, they would be constrained to proceed to the court of law against him for exemplary damages for injurious falsehood and malicious statements made against Omisore.
As of the time of writing, Lukman has not responded to Omisore's letter, but has reportedly stated that he will respond appropriately.
The APC, as a ruling party in Nigeria, has been under intense scrutiny and criticism for a variety of issues, including allegations of corruption, nepotism, and inadequate governance. The party' s internal crisis, therefore, raises concerns about its ability to govern effectively and address the challenges facing the country.
It is essential for political parties to maintain a united front, particularly in the face of national challenges. The current situation in the APC highlights the need for party leaders to resolve their differences and work towards a common goal, which is to serve the people of Nigeria.
