The ruling All Progressives Congress, APC is seeking for ways to convince former President Goodluck Jonathan to defect to its fold.

To make this happen, APC led by Governor Mai Mala Buni has been making serious overtures at Jonathan to convince him to dump the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP and join the ruling party. On the other hand, PDP leaders are making efforts to stop Jonathan from defecting to APC. This is because they see him as an asset who they would like to stay back in the PDP. Jonathan is yet to decide whether he would stay or defect to APC.

What APC revealed that may make Jonathan refuse to defect
While seeking ways to convince Jonathan to defect to its fold, APC made several promises to him. These promise were made public by the Secretary to Buni's committee, Senator James Akpanudoedehe when he spoke on the issue. APC promised to accept Jonathan, accord him the status of a founding member and most importantly allow him to contest for President under the party. But, the party was very quick to reveal that it would not give Jonathan its presidential ticket automatically.

Rather, APC disclosed that Jonathan would have to face other aspirants in the race and contest for the APC presidential ticket ahead of the 2023 election. That is the deal-breaker but APC revealed it not knowing that it may prove counter-purpose. This revelation alone may make Jonathan to reject the defection offer from APC. This is because it has made it clear to Jonathan that his defection to APC may mean engaging in a game of chance as he would be gambling with his reported presidential ambition in 2023. This is because he is not sure of getting the APC presidential ticket.

In fact, to be very honest, the chances of Jonathan losing the APC ticket is greater than his chances of winning the ticket if he defects. This was backed by the recent revelation made by a top APC Chieftain and former Governor of Oyo State, Adebayo Alao-Akala who stated that Jonathan can never be President under APC. The reason he gave to support this position was because APC already have loyal, influential and dedicated party members lined up who are seeking the presidential ticket of the party. So, it would be hard for Jonathan to just defect to APC, beat these APC heavyweights that are more poplar with many supporters and get the ticket.

The above point is actually meaningful. Again, Jonathan would not have supporters in APC large enough to help him defeat the likes of APC National Leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, Governor Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti State, Senator Ahmed Yerima, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and other top figures who are said to be interested in contesting for President in 2023. Above all, the APC leadership would have a way to favour who they want to give the ticket since the party already said that it would use consensus arrangement. This factor will also work against Jonathan. APC should not have revealed that Jonathan would contest for the ticket with others because many people thought that it would give Jonathan the presidential ticket automatically. Alternatively, APC should have done so after Jonathan has defected. That revelation alone may make him reject the defection offer because he can read the handwriting on the wall.
