Eguavoen Admits Something Is Wrong With Super Eagles

Former Super Eagles' defender and captain, Augustine Eguavoen has admitted that the Nigerian national team has not been at its best in recent time and concluded that something is wrong with the squad.

Speaking in his current capacity as the technical director of Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Eguavoen added that everyone in the soccer governing body is worried about the development.

Although he stopped short of declaring that the NFF could bow to ongoing clamour among Nigerian football fans for the removal of Gernot Rohr as Eagles' coach, 'Egu' assured that some changes will soon be effected.

The man fondly called 'Cerezo' during his playing days went on to affirm that the Eagles need better technical input to make them perform better in subsequent matches.

He, however, wondered why the team is suffering a slump in form and rythm, despite still retaining basically the same squad and crew in the past three years.

The former versatile defender, who played top-flight football in Belgium, Greece, Malta and USA before hanging his boots, acknowledged that he and other egg heads in the Football House have a huge role to play in turning the Eagles around.

His assurances come in response to critical comments from journalists, fans, politicians and administrators over the Eagles' poor performances against Liberia and Cape Verde in their last two matches of the 2022 World Cup qualifiers.

After struggling to beat Liberia 2-0 in Tangier, Morocco, courtesy of two penalties, the Eagles played out a drab 1-1 draw with Cape Verde in Lagos, as they barely managed to reach the knockout stage.

Nigerians have since then been calling for Rohr's sack, with sports minister, Sunday Dare questioning the NFF's rationale in keeping the Franco-Gernan tactician on the job.

However, while admitting that the Eagles are not in their best form at the moment and that a quick solution is needed to stem the tide, 'Egu' stopped short of confirming an impending sack for Rohr.

Eguavoen concluded evasively, as he said: "Something is just wrong somewhere, because they are playing the same style of football.

"Same personnel in terms of coaching and playing personnel; but we will try to look at it and proffer solutions to it "
