Chelsea took a bold decision by replacing Kepa Arrizabalaga with Edouard Mendy as the main keeper of the team. The London side spent big to sign Kepa from Athletic Bilbao, the Spanish goalkeeper struggled to perform at the level expected at a top club like Chelsea. The addition of the Senegalese goalkeeper has to turn out to be a great decision for the Blues.
He has adapted to the English Premier League and could help the team compete for the title. His form has been impressive, he could compete for the Premier League golden glove in the ongoing season.
While Mendy is comfortable dealing with defending set pieces and saving shots from the opposing team. He may need to improve on the following things to become a better goalkeeper in the English Premier League.
1. Edouard Mendy needs to improve on how to save a penalty kick. This flaw became obvious to the fans when Thomas Tuchel had to bring in Kepa Arrizabalaga during the Super Cup when the match was heading towards a penalty shoot-out.
It is important to note that two penalty kicks have been scored against Chelsea with Edouard Mendy as the goalkeeper in the EPL for the ongoing season. The Senegalese needs to work harder on the training ground to get better at this. Petr Čech used to struggle in saving penalties just like Mendy, the former goalkeeper became better with time and training.
2. Chelsea is a team that plays from the back, the goalkeeper has to be comfortable with distributing passes with his foot to cope with Thomas Tuchel's style of play.
Edouard Mendy has average footwork skills, he may have to improve on it to become an elite goalkeeper. With better footwork, Mendy would be able to deliver accurate passes to his teammates and also have the confidence to initiate the attack of the team from the back.
