In spite of the fact that former Lagos Governor, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu has not made his interest to run for president official, so many support groups have begun to drum support for him to run for president in 2023.
You will recall that the Southwest Agenda for Asiwaju (SWAGA), a political movement that has been building support for Tinubu’s presidential ambition was recently launched in Lagos. The inauguration of SWAGA even attracted the presence of Lagos state Governor, Babajide Sanwoolu, who also declared his support for the presidential ambition of the APC national leader.
According to the Leadership, another political support group whose mission is to drum support for Tinubu’s presidential ambition outside the country has declared their support for him to run for president in 2023. The group known as Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu (ABAT) in diaspora, said Tinubu is the only personality with political clout and national appeal that will consolidate on President Muhammadu Buhari's achievements.
The group said they have commissioned about 45 campaign offices in countries like the US, UK, UAE, France, Russia, Canada and many others.
One may begin to wonder what necessitates the commissioning of these campaign offices outside of Nigeria?
Apart from the fact that it will make Tinubu popular among diaspora Nigerians, there is a possibility that the Constitution of Nigeria may be amended to allow Nigerians in diaspora vote during general elections. If this happens before 2023, it will give Tinubu the upper edge if he manages to clinch the presidential ticket of the APC.
Though, Tinubu is eminently qualified to lead the country, some Nigerians however think he should play the role of a kingmaker, which he has been playing after leaving office as Governor in 2007; after photos of him seating on a chair during Jumat prayers went viral recently. Many think he may not have energy to handle the rigours of being the president after he openly admitted he had a knee surgery in London few months ago.
