Be Careful If You Are In These States As Virus Outbreak That Can Kill Human Has Been Reported To WHO

The Director General of Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), Dr Chikwe Ihekweazu in an interview with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) yesterday in Abuja reiterated that Kano, Plateau, Bauchi, Gombe, Nasarawa, Kaduna and Niger States have been inflicted with confirmed human cases of Avian Influenza (H5N1) known as “Bird flu.”

He said this while providing highlights of the epidemiological situation and response activities in Nigeria. According to his reports, in March, the above named seven States had cases of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) cases (H5N1) Avian Influenza in poultries, this led to the deployment of Rapid Response Team (RRT) from NCDC and the Federal Ministry of Agriculture to these States where samples were taken and taken to the Lab. After careful analysis of the samples about 20 people tested positive for different strains of the virus.

This was immediately reported to the WWorld Health Organisation (WHO) as required by the International Health Regulations (IHR), concerned organizations at Federal level and States and Local Government Authorities. Although Avian influenza Outbreak Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) level 1, has been established at national and in two states namely Plateau and Gombe and collection of samples continued in these States.

According to Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Avian Influenza refers to the disease caused by infection with avian (bird) influenza (flu) Type A viruses that primarily affect birds, but the virus has been reported in humans by contact with sick birds, and contagious in human, that is it can be passed from one person to person through airborne respiratory droplets such as coughs or sneezes.

The symptoms of the disease are usually between two to eight days and similar to the common flu. Symptoms includes; Cough, fever, sore throat, muscle aches, headache and shortness of breath may occur and might result into the death of the person.
