President Muhammadu Buhari has presented a Presidential Special Award for Bravery and Patriotism to the family of the late Joseph Blankson, who died while saving boat accident victims on the Abonnema-Bakana waterway in Rivers State on July 28, 2018.
The award was presented to the wife and two children of the deceased at the State House in Abuja on Thursday, September 30, 2021.
President Buhari disclosed this on his verified Facebook page on Saturday, October 2, 2021. The president described Blankson as a true Nigerian hero.
He disclosed that Blankson successfully rescued 13 people and tragically drowned while attempting to rescue the 14th victim. Blankson was the only casualty in the accident.
There are two important things to learn from the story of Joseph Blankson.
1. Bravery and Patriotism
Blankson showed bravery by putting his life at risk to rescue victims of the accident. The deceased sacrificed his life for his fellow Nigerians to live. He was indeed a true patriot and hero.
2. Appreciation of Good Values
It is commendable that President Buhari honoured Joseph Blankson, three years after his death. The recognition of the good gesture of Blankson will encourage Nigerians to emulate him.
We should always recognise and reward good gestures, just as we condemn bad behaviour in society.
