Five of the twenty universities given operational approval by the National Universities Commission (NUC) in 2021 are located in the North West. Three if these are in Kano State while Kaduna and Jigawa states have one each. Let us take a cursory look at each of these ivory towers.
Al-Istiqama University, Sumaila (AUSU) is one of the three new private universities in Kano State. AUSU which sits on an expanse of land that measures more than one hundred and two hectares. The institution was established by Honorable Abdulrahman Sulaiman Kawu Sumaila (OFR), a former minority leader at the House of Representatives. The second private universities recently licensed to operate in Kano State is the Capital City University, Kano (CCUK). Located aong Yusuf Maitama Sule Road, CCUK was founded in 2020 by Malam Abdulmalik Isah. The school is expected to take off with 17 programs across 3 faculties.
Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria (MAAUN) is the third among the newly established universities in Kano State. The proprietor of MAAUN is Professor Adamu Abubakar Gwarzo, a medical consultant. The pioneer vice chancellor of the university is Professor Muhammed Magaji
NOK University, Kachia (NUK) is the only newly approved university in and the first indigenous private university in Kaduna State. The university was founded in 2020 by Chief Anthony Hassan, a 1984 graduate of Ahmadu Bello University. The pioneer vice chancellor of NUK is Ishaya Nock, a professor of Zoology. The university, which is the first in Southern Kaduna, currently runs 15 courses across 3 faculties.
Khadija University, Majia (KUM) is located on Hadejia Road, Majia in Jigawa State. It is the first private university in the state. The university was founded by the Khadija Foundation under the chairmanship of Mr Adam Musa Majiya. The pioneer vice chancellor is Mrs Hassana Sani Darma, a Professor of Special Education from Bayero University, Kano.
