The All Progressive Congress (APC) in Niger State has suspended its state Chairman, Haliru Zakari Jikantoro, for allegedly engaging in anti-party activities during the recently concluded presidential and National Assembly elections. The suspension was carried out by the Kashini ward executive of the party in the Agwara Local Government Area of the state, which accused Jikantoro of violating the party’s constitution and causing a crisis in the party ahead of the governorship and state assembly polls.
In a letter of suspension dated March 2nd, 2023, and signed by the 21-member executives, the ward executive accused the embattled chairman of deliberately disregarding the party’s constitution and engaging in activities that could undermine the success of the party during the recent elections.
This suspension comes on the heels of another suspension of a chieftain of the party, Sani Bello Mustapha, by the APC Kontagora Central executives for alleged anti-party activities.
However, in a swift reaction to the suspension of the state Chairman, the APC state Publicity Secretary, Labaran Musa, dismissed the suspension as callous, heartless, and an imagination of the peddlers. Musa stated that based on the party’s constitution, article 21 sub-section one and two, the suspension cannot stand because a member in high esteem like the state chairman must be channeled to the local government, zonal, and state working committees for ratification after due consideration. Musa maintained that the ward executives lacked the power to suspend the state chairman.
