On Thursday, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, a candidate for governor from the Labour Party, paid a visit to the Oba of Lagos to ask for his support and to inform him of his intentions. Many divisive responses and remarks have been posted online in response to Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour's visit to the Oba of Lagos. A well-known Nigerian writer named Sam Omatseye responded to the visit by tweeting a statement in which he described what he saw there.

Sam Omatseye remarked that he saw Gbadebo's father take off his cap during the visit, as well as the other elders who were with them doing the same. Gbadebo did not, however. He pointed out that Gbadebo's refusal to take off his cap is disrespectful to Yoruba tradition. Sam Omatseye remarked:

"I observed how revealing Mr. Rhodes Vivor's visit to the Oba of Lagos was. As per Yoruba custom, even his father and other leaders took off their caps. Gbadebo, a gentleman, did not completely disregard our tradition".
