Mahrez admits winning free kick was a mistake

Manchester City's Algerian winger Riyad Mahrez has opened up on his match-winning set piece away to Paris Saint-Germain in the first leg of the Champions League semi-final played in the French Capital on Wednesday night.

After watching his late strike go through PSG's wall, the left-footed winger admitted that he had intended to curl the ball around the wall of the french team, but that he got it all wrong and the ball ended in the back of the net to give Pep Guardiola's men a significant advantage, going in the second leg in a week's time.

"I wanted to go around the wall, to be honest, and I missed it, it went between the two players and fortunately it was in. I was so happy, I knew we could win here and to score to make it 2-1 for the team was amazing." the former Leicester City man confessed after the game.

Mahrez, it will be remembered, scored a similar freekick to eliminate the Super Eagles of Nigeria in the semifinal of the last African Cup of Nations.
