Ibadan: The City With The Highest Number Of Agricultural Research Institutes In Nigeria

Information obtained from the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (FMARD) shows that there are about twenty agriculture related research institutes in Nigeria. Closer checks reveals further that the city with the highest concentration of these institutes is Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State. Four of these research organizations are currently domiciled in the city. Join me to take brief looks at these research bodies.

First on my list is International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA). It is located along Oyo Road in Ibadan. This organization was founded in 1967 and is arguably the flagship research institution in Nigeria. According to its website, IITA is focused on research that improves security. In order to achieve this, it carries out research leading to genetic improvement of staple crops like rice, yam, cassava and so on.

Cocoa Research Institute of Nigeria (CRIN) is also located in the city. This body was established in 1964. CRIN has a scope of research which includes kola, coffee, cashew and tea. It also has substations in six states across Nigeria. The current director of the institute is Dr Olayiwola Olubamiwa.

National Horticultural Research Institute (NIHORT) is the third agricultural research body in the city. It was founded in 1975 and located on an area of 350 hectares in Idi Ishin axis of Jericho Area of Ibadan. According to its website, the institute has mandate to conduct research into genetic improvement, production, processing, storage, utilization and marketing of tropical fruits, vegetables, spices and ornamentals plants of both nutritional and economic importance. The institute has four sub stations and one experimental station to facilitate its activities.

Forestry Research Institute of Nigeria (FRIN) is another notable agriculture related organization in the city. It is however worthy of note that FRIN (which was established in 1954) is under the direct control of the Ministry of Environment. It currently has outstations and colleges across Nigeria. Interestingly, it is the only organization in this category that has professor as chief executive officer.
