In the report on BBC News Pidgin, 42 years old mother of three, Elizabeth Owie had left home on Saturday morning, 25th of February 2023 to cast her vote in Ogheghe community Ikpoba Okha Local Government Area in Edo state when she was shot dead by some unknown gunmen who reportedly attacked her polling Unit.

The husband of the deceased, Owie Osadebamwen, while narrating the incident to BBC News, said that he did not follow his wife to vote, she went alone and they had maintained communication until tragedy struck.

According to Osadebamwen, the officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission came late to the polling unit and his wife had to stay longer than expected just to ensure she voted. He said that later in the evening, he received a call that gunmen had attacked the Polling unit and that blood was coming out of his wife body.

He said that he rushed to the scene only to meet his wife laying on the floor unconscious. He said that he immediately rushed her to the hospital where she was confirmed dead.

In his words, he said; "On that faithful day, my wife left home to go and vote around 8 to 9 am in the morning, but the INEC officials did not arrive on time and that delayed the whole process. She waited till evening to vote. The election was going peacefully until evening when gunmen hit the polling unit and started shooting sporadically."

“I called her around 3:00 pm but she did not pick. I called another person who also went to vote, and the person told me that my wife was there with them. Around 6:00 pm in the evening, she called me back that she would soon be back home and that she missed my call earlier. It was around 7:00 pm my younger one gave me a call that blood was flowing from my wife's body, that she had been shot."

"I rushed down to the location with my car and saw my wife on the ground with blood coming out of her body. I rushed her to the first and second hospitals but she was rejected. It was at the third hospital that she was pronounced dead by doctors. My wife is my strength, mother, sister and my best friend. Our marriage was about to clock 10 years before she died."
