According to CNN, Palestinian groups in Gaza and Israel engaged in an exchange of fire on Tuesday, just after the death of a Palestinian prisoner who had been on a hunger strike in an Israeli prison.
The Israeli army reported that 22 rockets were launched from Gaza into Israel, with 16 of them falling in open areas and the remaining four being intercepted.
Southern parts of the country were alerted by sirens, and in response, Israeli tanks fired shells into the Gaza Strip.
Reports from Israel's national emergency medical service Magen David Adom stated that a 25-year-old Israeli and three foreign workers were injured in the southern city of Sderot from rocket fire.
Meanwhile, Palestinian groups Hamas and Islamic Jihad claimed responsibility for the rocket fire, according to Haaretz newspaper.
The death of Khader Adnan, a 44-year-old Palestinian hunger striker, in an Israeli prison triggered outrage in Palestine.
Adnan, a member of Islamic Jihad, began his hunger strike on February 5, 2023, to protest his detention by the Israeli authorities. The Israel Prison Service (IPS) reported that he was found unconscious and was taken to the hospital, but attempts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful.
Adnan had previously staged multiple hunger strikes to protest his detention by Israeli forces. In 2012, he staged a 66-day hunger strike, which forced the Israeli authorities to release him.
He also staged similar hunger strikes in 2015 and 2018. Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh called Adnan's death a "deliberate assassination," and his death has been met with widespread condemnation.
