Abu Talib protected and defended Prophet Muhammad (saw) during his life while Khadija R.A provided support at home to him.
Khadija R.A. and Abu Talib were the main supporters of Muhammad during the hostile days in Mecca. Both the wife and uncle of Prophet Muhammad passed away in 619 CE.
The year in which Khadija R.A and Abu Talib passed away is called "Aamul Huzn", i.e., the year of sorrow or grief.
It was the tenth year after the start of the revelation of the Quran and the 10th year of Prophethood (619 CE) when Abu Talib was around 80 years old. His health had deteriorated and he had become ill. And after some days, he breathed his last. This was a great loss to Prophet Muhammad.
The death of Abu Talib was a great loss to Muhammad. His uncle had protected and defended him for the previous ten years. After the death of Abu Talib, the Quraish increased their persecution of the Prophet as never before. The Quraysh became more hostile after the death of Abu Talib.
Within 40 days of the death of Abu Talib, Prophet Muhammad’s beloved wife "Khadija R.A" also passed away. She was 65 years old at the time and her health had suffered greatly from the three-year boycott of Muslims.
While the Prophet’s uncle was his strongest support in Makkah, Khadijah R.A was his closest friend and gave him full support at home. He loved her so much, as she was the first to believe in him and supported him with all her heart.

The Prophet says about Khadija R.A., "She believed in me when no one else did. She embraced Islam when people disbelieved me. And she helped and comforted me with her personality and wealth when there was no one else to lend me a helping hand."
The death of Khadijah R.A left the Prophet lonely. He was not seen smiling for several months after her death. Her memory was always alive in his mind, even many years later after he migrated to Madinah.
Prophet Muhammad didn't marry any women till Khadija R.A was alive. After Khadija R.A passed away, the Prophet married Sawda bint Zama'a R.A. I was nourished by her love, "Prophet Muhammad said about her first wife, Khadija R.A."
