As Nigerians prepare to vote in gubernatorial and state house of assembly elections on Saturday, March 18, 2023, renowned journalist and political analyst, Dr. Constance Ikokwu, has come out to reveal two key things that have suddenly happened in the nation's political space since Peter Obi and the Labour Party won 12 states in the presidential elections held two weeks ago.
Dr. Ikokwu stated during an interview on ARISE TV's 'Prime Time' program with Charles Aniagolu a few hours ago that not only have Nigerians suddenly realized the power they possess in terms of dislodging bad leaders through the ballot box, but they have also come to realize that systemic and political change is a gradual process that cannot be accomplished at once.
"There is undoubtedly a lot of attention on INEC, people are really concerned and truly scared, and they are hopeful that what happened during the last election will not happen again during the governorship polls. But guess what? Because of the modifications, the Labour Party gained twelve states, much to the surprise of many people, and two things have transpired since then.
First of all, people have understood that they have the power to blow sit-tight leaders out of the political water if they truly turn out to vote, regardless of the barriers and glitches thrown in their way. Second, people are learning that the effort to change things is more like a marathon than a 100-meter dash. As a result, individuals are starting to fasten their seatbelts because they are no longer ready to allow thing same stay the same way again. Hence, even if the Labour Party does not win all of the states it desires in the governorship elections, this movement will continue. It's going to be a marathon.
