Dietary fibres do this by absorbing A large amount of water from the intestine and add it to the stool or faeces to soften it. Constipation can cause damage to the lower part of the rectum due to excessive straining and this may lead to pile or haemorrhoid. Food rich in dietary fibres include vegetables, whole grains and cereals.
