Sleeping immediately after eating is a habit that many people have adopted for various reasons, some people do it out of convenience while others do it to get rid of fatigue or to relax after a long day. According to MedicalNewsToday, here are reasons why you should avoid sleeping immediately after eating.
1.Acid reflux or heartburn.
When we lie down the stomach acid can flow back into the esophagus causing a burning sensation in the chest. This is because the valve between the stomach and esophagus relaxes when we lie down allowing acid to leak back into the esophagus.
2. Weight gain.
When you sleep after eating, your metabolism slows down which means our bodies are less effective at burning calories. This can make the food you have eaten to be stored as fat leading to weight gain over time.
When you lie down the digestive process slows down and food can remain in the stomach for longer periods, this can cause bloating, discomfort and even nausea.
4.A restless sleep.
The moment you sleep on a full stomach you body is less likely to enter into the deep REM sleep cycle which is essential for restorative sleep, this can lead to a feeling of tiredness and lethargy even after a long sleep.
it is recommended to wait at least two hours after eating before going to bed to allow for proper digestion and restful sleep.
