Chelsea football club will travel to Italy to face Juventus in their match day 2 fixture of the 2021/2022 UEFA Champions league season.
Chelsea FC will try to put their last weekend's 1-0 defeat to Manchester City behind them as they try to extend their points to 6 points from 2 UEFA Champions league games.
For Chelsea to achieve this, Thomas Tuchel, the Chelsea manager must try to avoid the mistakes he made last weekend that cost Chelsea FC the entire 3 points.
What are these mistakes?
1. Playing 3 Defensive Midfielders at a time: Chelsea has excelled greatly since last season by playing in a 3-4-3 formation. This formation has always included a 2 central midfielders. But on saturday, the manager fielded Mateo Kovacic, Ngolo Kante and Jorginho in a 3-5-2 formation. While this pragmatic tactics limited Manchester City's Penetration' into the Chelsea's defense,it also limited the creativity of the Chelsea team to the point that Chelsea FC had only 5 shots with none of them hitting the target. After he discovered his mistake, he substituted Ngolo Kante and introduced Kai Havertz but Manchester City had already dominated the game. Against a Juventus team that has a brilliant combination of Georgio Chiellini and Leonardo Bonucci at the heart of the defense, the manager need to set up a formation that will be creative enough to open up the Juventus defense.
2. He should revert back to the usual 3 man attack. Also against Manchester City, Chelsea FC paired up Romelu Lukaku and Timo Werner upfront in a 3-5-2 formation instead of the usual 3 attackers like Romelu Lukaku, Kai Havertz and Mason Mount in a 3-4-3 formation. This will allow the team to attack from both the center and also from the wings. And such an approach is necessary against a Juventus that has an experienced defense line.
