Eminent priest and former Catholic Archbishop of Abuja John Cardinal Onaiyekan failed in his plans to ordain President-elect Bola Tinubu before the end of the electoral tribunal.
According to him, "it doesn't make much sense."
Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Peter Obi of the Labor Party (LP) are challenging INEC's declaration of the APC candidate as the winner of the February 25 election in court. The Presidential Electoral Court set May 8 to hear the requests.
In an interview with Channels Television yesterday, Onaiyekan said the popular election campaign should be reviewed, noting that it would produce winners without the shadow of the court behind the victory. "There are cases in court that have not been resolved. That is why we are in an unusual situation. We have a president-elect whose election has been challenged and is being heard by the courts. I am still waiting for the court to tell me who won the election; there is no use in cursing people while they are still in court.
“I know it happened with governors, but the outcome was certainly not the best of all cases." I think we need to revise our selection process so that we have a winner who is sworn in and everyone gets together.
"It's a shame that the court is taking longer to make a decision. My problem is that the whole election system needs to be properly reviewed so that it's easier for the winner to be sworn in and everybody can rally around him. That's not right. The system is constantly challenged. We should discover why every choice is challenged."
