Labour Party VP Candidate, Yusuf Datti Reveals Why Tinubu's Swearing-in On May 29 Should Be Halted

Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, the Labour Party's 2023 vice presidential candidate, has once again declared his strong objection to President-elect Bola Tinubu and his vice president, Kashim Shettima, being sworn in.

According to sources, Baba-Ahmed is convinced that inauguration of Tinubu, whose electoral triumph did not meet constitutional standards, would weaken democracy itself.

The LP vice presidential candidate chastised the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Mahmood Yakubu, for handing Tinubu a certificate of return on the spur of the moment. With only four days till Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu takes office as Nigeria's president, Baba-Ahmed emphasized that such a ceremony would be a direct assault on democracy.

Datti delivered his message via Zoom to a group of Labour Party elected leaders in Abuja, including eight Senators-elect and 36 members-elect of the Federal House of Representatives. During his speech, Datti stated unequivocally, "The events scheduled for May 29th are a clear violation of the constitution, and I emphasize a clear violation." I say this without hesitation and because the situation is critical."

The petitions filed against Tinubu's victory in the February 25th presidential election continue to stoke debate across the country. While some are pushing for the inauguration to be postponed, others maintain that the presidential election petition tribunal must issue its decision before any inauguration can take place.
