John Onaiyekan, the archbishop of the Abuja Catholic Archdiocese, has stated that it "makes no sense" to swear in Bola Ahmed Tinubu as president -elect before the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal's hearing is through.
Recall that the Labour Party's Peter Obi and the People's Democratic Party's Atiku Abubakar, both presidential contenders, had contested Tinubu's victory in the February 25 presidential elections.
The hearing is scheduled to begin on May 8, 2023, but work on the president -elect's inauguration and swearing -in ceremony has continued apace.
According to Punch Newspaper, Archbishop Onaiyekan branded the election process as "anomalous" in a Channels Television interview on Thursday. He also said he was still waiting for the court to announce the election's winner.
The election process should be reviewed, he continued, as it would make it simpler for a victor to emerge so that he can be sworn in and the populace can support him. However, he voiced concern that the country's electoral system was frequently challenged.
There are court matters that have not yet been resolved. We are in an unusual predicament as a result of this. Our newly elected president's election is being contested, and the court is addressing it.
"I'm still awaiting word from the court regarding the results of the election. People shouldn't be sworn in while they are still in court, so this doesn't make much sense. I am aware that governors have experienced it, but the results have not always been favorable.
I believe that we need to evaluate our election procedures in order to produce a victor who will be sworn in and who everyone will support. It is unfortunate that the court's decision-making process is taking longer than expected.
"My issue is that the entire election process needs to be properly revised so that winners can more easily emerge in accordance with the desires of the people. It is improper.
