South East leaders must act — Nigerians react after gunmen killed ex-NAFDAC DG Akunyili's husband

Nigerians have denounced the assassination of Dr Chike Akunyili, the late husband of late former NAFDAC Director General and Information Minister Prof Dora Akunyili, by unidentified gunmen.

According to the DAILY POST, Akunyili was killed along with his driver and escort on Tuesday while traveling from Onitsha to Umuoji near Eke Nkpor.

Akunyili was said to have attended a lecture in commemoration of his late wife, Prof Dora Akunyili, at Sharon Hall, All Saints Cathedral, Onitsha, organized by the University of Nigeria Nsukka Alumni Association (UNAA), Onitsha chapter.

His death sparked outrage among Nigerians, who flocked to social media to criticize the Buhari administration's relentless executions.

Some have urged South East officials to intervene to prevent the region's insecurity from spiraling out of control.

Here are some of the responses obtained by DAILY POST:

@DavidHundeyin “Some days, I'm relieved that my father passed peacefully in 2017.” Because I can't image always fearing the phone call informing me of unknown assailants. Akunyili does not deserve to be honored by Nigeria. A shambles.”

@Zynnie “Dr Chike Akunyili (Dr Dora Akunyili's spouse) is no longer alive. Unknown gunmen are said to have slain him. I'm at a loss for words and heartbroken. This can't be true. This cannot be our usual.”

@UncleAjala “Dr. Chike Akunyili, late Dora Akunyili's husband, was murdered by unknown gunmen in Anambra state yesterday. What is Buhari's government, state governments, and Nigeria's security apparatus doing about the country's daily killings, kidnappings, and terror? May his spirit find peace.”

@Kwukenkwu “The tragic news of Dr Chike Akunyili's death reveals a lot about the escalating insecurity in the South East, and it will generate a bad narrative about returning home.” Read here

@EmodiMba “As time goes on, many IGBOs will cease returning home and will instead bring their enterprises home for security reasons. It will still be a win-win situation for the zoo and an individual aim for zoo hunter.
