Due to the All Progressive Congress's zoning arrangements, the Senate Presidency is zoned to south-south. It has also been reported that President-elect Bola Tinubu wants a Christian to run for Senate President. Last Monday, Senator Kashim Shettima, the Vice President-elect, declared that it would be inappropriate to zone the Senate Presidency to a Muslim in the North. Abdulaziz Yari, former governor of Zamfara state and senator-elect, claims that having two Muslims as parliament leaders is not a problem.
In an interview with Arise Tv News, he asserted that Christians once served in the Senate and as Deputy President in Nigeria's Parliament. Religion, he claims, is irrelevant in this case because the Nigerian constitution does not distinguish between Muslims and Christians.
'People are saying Muslim, Muslim, Muslim,' he said. Nothing in the constitution requires a Christian or a Muslim to be President. By the way, neither Islam nor Christianity were mentioned in the constitution. The only thing recognized by the Constitution is the true faith.
The constitution assures that I can be both Christian and Muslim today and tomorrow. Religion was not recognized as a criterion for appointment to political office in the Constitution. There is nothing inherently improper with having Muslims serve as Senate President and Deputy Senate President. It is the role of the parliament to facilitate Muslim-Muslim discussion. Once upon a time, the Senate resolved to elect a Christian as Senate President and Deputy Senate President. The speaker was a Christian as well. It occurred in this country".
