Whether our army would experienced any significant growth as an institution, such that we would be proud of would remain to be seen, and this can only be determined by the sincerity and determination of the caliber of leaders that would emerged to lead her. And with the emergence of Major General Ibrahim Atahiru as the new Chief of Army Staff (COAS), the Nigerian Army is about experiencing a new lease of life under his leadership. This is a fact that can be taken to the market, as the man, who is known within his circle and spheres as a man that always walk the talk has promised so. Making his intention for the Nigerian Army known to all recently at the Nigerian Army head quarter in Abuja, General Atahiru informed Nigerians and the world that the army under his watch must be repositioned to contribute to land component competencies both as a single service, joint, inter-agency, as well as multi-national force to confront all national and international threat.
The New COAS was categorical and business ready, as he revealed further that a command philosophy is imperative in order to lay the frame work in which the army would defeat Nigerian adversaries as the country’s foremost land force. He pointed out that he intend to provide an effective strategic and operational leadership to all Nigerian Army formation, Departments, Institutions, and establishment, as well as others specialized units in both single Service, joint and inter-Agency operating environment. Atahiru stated that the new innovative philosophy which he intend to used in leading the Nigerian Army as the COAS comes with one sole objective, which is to overcome all national security challenges as ordered by President Mohammadu Buhari in line with the constitution of the country.
Linking his philosophy to the pillar of the army which is READINESS, he revealed further that the Army under his watch would entails mission oriented training, functional manning and equipment. He pointed out to the personnel, reminding them of their DUTY TO THE COUNTRY which entails, loyalty, and sacrifice to our father’s land, and DEPENDABILITY, which is inbuilt in the capacity of the military to accomplish any mission in line with the norms of humanity as enshrine in the force’s core values and ethic.
Continuous leadership development is another core area the new COAS promised to deliver on in his time as the country’s COAS. He promised to make the leadership of our Army to be 21st century commanders. The new COAS concluded by informing the army, gentle men of the press, fellow countrymen/women and the world that he is proud to be leading a highly brave, loyal, and discipline Nigerian Army that is first among equal. He admonished his Army to braced up! As together we will defeats all our adversaries in order to restore peace across Nigeria working with sister Services and other government departments and agencies.”, the COAS added.
