As a parent, preparing your kids for school requires waking up early and cooking. Due to the amount of stress it involves. Most parents usually go for junk foods because they're fast to prepare. However, research has shown that prolong consumption of junk foods could lead to certain health problems in children such as obesity and tooth decay. It therefore becomes necessary that you feed your kids with nutritious foods.


Parents are advised to set up a food calendar to reduce the stress of making food choices. In this article, I will be showing you some healthy foods you can include in your kid's lunchbox instead of junks.


1. Rice.



This is definitely the most available staple food in Nigeria. The amazing fact about rice is that it can be prepared in many ways, some of which include fried, jollof, white, etc. Rice is an excellent source of carbohydrates, and preparing it for your kids before school is certainly better than junks.


2. Moi-moi.



One good thing about moi moi is that you don't necessarily need to prepare it at home. You can easily buy it from roadside sellers, thus reducing the stress. Moi moi is a derivative of beans, which means that it's an excellent source of protein.


3. Boiled corn.



Corn is also a healthy alternative. It's pretty easy and fast to prepare, the only downside is that it's seasonal. Don't hesitate to include boiled corn in your kids' food basket if it's available because it has lots of health benefits. Some of which includes vitamins and carbohydrates.


4. Porridge yam.



Yam is no doubt one of the most versatile foods out there. Reason being that it has different modes of preparation. However, making your yam into a porridge is actually the healthiest way of preparing it because it offers additional health benefits. You should try to include it in your kid's lunchbox because it's healthy.


5. Beans. 



Beans is one of the best foods you can prepare for your children. Apart from its nutritious taste, it also contains amazing health benefits such as fiber, protein, iron, and others. However, it is advisable to start preparing beans early because it's very slow to cook.


6. Plantain porridge.



Just like yam, plantain is also very versatile as it can be prepared in various ways. It also has a lot of health benefits. Plantain is an excellent source of carbohydrates, fiber, and vitamins. Preparing it for your kids is definitely better than giving them junk foods. 


7. Okpa.



This is no doubt one of the most popular foods in South Eastern Nigeria. Okpa can easily pass as a snack because you might not need to prepare it at home. You can easily purchase okpa from roadside sellers, and it's readily available. So if you're in a situation where you can't cook, you should definitely buy okpa for your children instead of junks. 


8. Coco yam.



Coco yam is one of the most underrated foods on this list. Seriously, it seems like people have totally forgotten about the health benefits of this super food. This is definitely one of the best foods you can feed your children because it has outstanding health benefits. Some of which includes vitamins, antioxidants, carbohydrates, etc. Sadly, coco yam is not so popular nowadays, as only a few parents tend to prepare it for their children.
