For Parents: 3 Reasons Why Spanking and Verbal Abuse Does More Harm Than Good

As a parent, one of your duties is to discipline your kids and teach them how to behave. It takes time, technique and intentionality to be able to make it work. Some parents however, instead of choosing the positive strategies to instill discipline, resort to spanking and verbal abuse which seems like the easiest way to get them to do what you want at that point, but it's just a temporary solution.

Instead of doing that and risk scarring your kids for life, why not learn the effective and healthy developmental strategies? Here are three reasons why spanking and verbal abuse does more harm than good:

1. SPANKING IS AN UNHEALTHY CYCLE

The more you spank your kid, the more they have the tendency to misbehave. Spanking increases aggression and anger in children, and if your response is to continually hit them, it'll turn to an endless violent cycle. You're unconsciously teaching your kids that causing someone pain when one is frustrated is okay. That is why children that got spanked by their parents tend to grow up as domestic abusers.

2. LASTING SCARS

Physical punishment increases the risk of getting injured and it increases their stress levels and affect their brain development. That's the reason why when kids get spanked in school due to low grades, they still do not improve. If it's a young kid, he may start getting scared of you and I don't know why any parent would want that. Don't risk scarring your child for life.

3. WORDS HURT

Yelling at your kids and using your words to abuse them emotionally and to make them feel ashamed messes with your kid's self-esteem. Harsh verbal scolding can make your kids start acting according to what you've labeled them as. Be careful with your words.
