Categories of People Who Should Not Sleep on Their Right Side

Are you aware that there are certain category of people who should avoid sleeping on the right side? In as much as side sleeping is considered healthy and good for the body, there are still some precautionary measures to take when it comes to the state of your health. In this article in line with a publication on Very Well Health, there are some categories of people who may be advised to avoid sleeping on their right side, to prevent complications or problems with their health.

Pregnant women: Sleeping on the right side during pregnancy can put pressure on the liver, which can cause discomfort or pain. It can also restrict blood flow to the fetus, leading to decreased oxygen and nutrient supply.Sleeping on the left side is generally recommended during pregnancy as it improves blood flow to the fetus and helps to prevent issues such as back pain, snoring, and heartburn.

People with acid reflux: While sleeping on the right side can reduce acid reflux symptoms for some people, it can worsen symptoms for others. This is because the stomach is located on the left side of the body, and sleeping on the right side can allow stomach acid to flow back up into the esophagus.Sleeping on the left side can help reduce the likelihood of acid reflux.

People with sleep apnea: Sleeping on the right side can worsen symptoms of sleep apnea, a condition in which breathing stops and starts during sleep. This is because sleeping on the right side can cause the tongue and soft tissues in the throat to collapse, blocking the airway.

People with heart disease: For people with certain types of heart disease, such as congestive heart failure, sleeping on the right side can worsen symptoms such as shortness of breath, coughing, and swelling in the legs. This is because the heart has to work harder to pump blood against gravity when sleeping on the right side. Sleeping on the left side can improve blood flow and help reduce these symptoms.

However, it is always best to consult with a doctor or healthcare professional if you are unsure about which sleeping position is best for you.
