Good parenting plays a huge role in a child's upbringing and if a child does not have a solid foundation, it shows in his/her relationship with others, at work, in their health, and society at large.

Nowadays, we are in the era where parents find it difficult to maintain a good relationship with their children, that is why there are lots of children who are exposed to distractions in the world.

This article highlights 6 points on the importance of good parenting in a child's development.

1. Good parenting helps to teach the child about values that will shape their lives for the better

When a child is raised in a dramatic environment, he grows up having similar behaviour.

But when a child comes from a home where he/she is taught good morals, difference between right and wrong, it helps the child choose acceptable behaviors and grow into a responsible adult.

2. Parents are the pillars of support, guidance, and love.

Family is where life begins and love never ends. No matter how old a child gets, there’s nothing more comforting and soothing than their parents' arms.

Good parenting helps to protect children from developing anxiety, depression, anti-social behavior, among others. Using Big Brother Naija Shine Ya Eye housemate Angel for instance, she is often spotted sitting by herself or being emotional.

In a conversation, one of the male contestants, Cross, spoke about Angel’s mood swings. He told White money and Pere who are also fellow housemates that he does not understand Angel, as she can change her mood whenever she pleases.

However, White money advised him to show her love despite her mood. In his words, “What she needs is excess love. Even as she is doing that thing, just give her love.”

He also pointed out that Angel’s attitude stems from the fact that she didn’t grow up with her parents.

Angel did not have paternal love which made her teach herself the things she knows.

3. The child is brought up in the atmosphere of love

There is no such thing as loving a child too much. It is only when parents do things like material indulgence, leniency, and over-protection as a way of showing love, that’s when a child is spoilt.

Loving your child can be as simple as giving them hugs, spending time with them and listening to their challenges every day. When a father or mother shows these acts of love to their young one, it creates a deep sense of calm, emotional warmth and contentment in the child's development.

4. Good parents are safe haven to their kids

Children raised by parents who are always there for them, respond to their signals and are sensitive to their needs, have better emotional development, social development, and stable mental health.

5. Good parenting boosts the child's self-esteem

Children develop their self-esteem when they see themselves through the eyes of their parents. Praising accomplishments, no matter how small, will make a child feel proud of himself/herself. Your words and actions as a parent affect your child's self-esteem more than anything else.

6. Children learn essential life lessons from good parents. Whether it is the way to behave in public, showing gratitude or the virtue of sharing with others, parents teach essential life lessons to their children at an early age.

Successful parenting is not about achieving perfection, but trying to make decisions in the best interest of the child.
