Although the ruling All Progressives Congress keeps reiterating that it was yet to zone the principal offices in the National Assembly for the 10th Senate, indications are rife that Northern Nigeria despite keeping the position of the Senate President in the past 16 years is still keen on retaining it in the 10th Assembly.
Although insinuations are rife that it is the turn of the South to produce the next Senate President, underground scheming in the polity may well make it elusive for southern politicians, going by what Daily Times gathered.
Those advocating for the North to win are arguing that even if the opposition parties have dubbed the presidential election "a flawed one," it was their votes that helped the APC win.
According to a source who requested anonymity and spoke to the Daily Times newspaper, the most recent push for the north to obtain the job may be related to the necessity for the region to keep tabs on what the President is doing in order to safeguard their interests. He asserted that because both the Senate and the White House serve as the government's administrative centres, it is best for them to be located in separate areas.
One is in charge of the legislative arm, and the other is in charge of the executive. It will be beneficial to allow the North to have the Senate President since the South now holds that position.
The Vice Presidency actually has limited authority and can only carry out the President's designated tasks. In this regard, having it will benefit the North while the South gains the Speaker of the House of Representatives.
The insider claims that opening up the race as part of the plan would polarise southern interests and encourage them to enter the competition as a divided house.
The source told Daily time on anonymity further suggested that the senators are looking towards the NW for a candidate because the NC has given us people like Bukola Saraki and Senator David Mark.
Orji Uzor Kalu, Osita Izunaso, and Senator Godswill Akpabio are the southern contenders who have so far entered the competitive race for the job.
