Read How PDP Crisis Of 14 Years Was Resolved In Cross Rivers State

It is surprising that the PDP was able to settle some of its indoor crisis shortly after the defection of Governor Ben Ayade in Cross Rivers State. The crisis which has been in the party for fourteen years ended all of a sudden as the party looks forward to brush aside the effects of Ayade's defection to the APC.

When Ayade made his intent to join the APC known, many thought that the PDP would seriously feel the impact because the party might be left rudderless and be open to more issues most especially as its core leaders may decide to leave the party to identify themselves with the state governor.

But at least three key and strong members have come together to bury the hatchets and let bygone be bygone within the APC. The three leaders are Liyel Imoke, Donald Duke and Gershom Bassey, who is a member of the House of Senate.

Both Liyel Imoke and Donald Duke were former governors of the state. But they parted ways in 2007 when Liyel Imoke took over the affairs of the state and Donald Duke completed his own second term as the governor of the state. Reports have it that Duke went on a "sabbatical" though he used the Social Democratic Party (SDP) to contest for presidency in 2019.

The Nation Newspaper said that the three politicians commonly called the "three musketeers" of the PDP in Cross Rivers State met on Sunday, 6 June to discuss the rift among them and decided to let the sleeping dog lie.

According to the newspaper, two venues were used for the amicable settlement of the matter which has been there for fourteen years, or simply put since 2007. The first venue belonged to Liyel Imoke and there they talked about the matter and appealed to one another to let the issue be resolved for the interest of the party.

Donald Duke hosted the reception at his own place at Diamond Hill. Duke talked at length about the crisis. He said that several people were waiting to hear from them (Duke, Imoke and Bassey) and that they will like to hear that the house (PDP) was in order. He revealed, "I want to say something; this house is in order”.

Donald Duke made reference to "sabbatical", perhaps referring to when he was quiet in the PDP and when he went to the Social Democratic Party (SDP) to contest for the presidency in 2019. He said there was no record that he retired from the PDP. He declared, “I may have gone on sabbatical and temporary retirement but you’ll find no record of me retiring from PDP. We have work to do and we can’t sit down here to do this work".

It was not clear who initiated the meeting, but Liyel Imoke is among the PDP Reconcilation Committee set up by the national leadership of the party to solve all matters and grievances in the party towards the 2023 general elections. Imoke was happy with the reunification and he was confident that the PDP would be able to recapture the state in 2023.

The Nation Newspaper further reported that Senator Gershom Bassey as saying that the PDP is waxing stronger in Cross Rivers State. He said that he was a true member of the PDP and that he had no reasons (whatsoever) to join the All Progresives Congress.

Then, can it be concluded that the defection of Ben Ayade was a blessing in disguise for the PDP in Cross Rivers State?
