[Opinion] Why the South East traditional rulers are calling on Buhari to end insecurity in the region

People should not be complacent about issues that do not directly affect them until they have caught up with them, at which point they should begin to look for possible solutions. In the South East, many eminent Nigerians of Igbo extraction are feeling at home while their houses are on fire. Things that could have been resolved with a small amount of money would almost certainly require more money if they were ignored.

If these ascertained facts are not correct, why would the Igbo leaders and governors who gathered in Enugu a few weeks ago not be able to reach a decision on what to do to end killings, destruction of properties, and sit-at-home orders? What they only achieved that day was a show of shame, because it was reported that Uzodinma came to the meeting with double-amoured tanks and military men who were armed to the teeth. At the end of the meeting, the traditional rulers, Ohaneze Ndigbo readers, and the Governors of the South East only passed out warnings to the unknown gunmen and those who are enforcing the sit-at-home order, saying that the initiators of the sit-at-home order are not living in Nigeria, therefore they can't control the South East.

Is this what was expected from the South East leaders, who would have looked for a permanent solution to this issue? They would have planned on how to meet President Buhari and dialogue for Kanu's release, since his detention is the main reason why there is unrest in the South East. Instead, they choose to declare the end of the sit-at-home regime and insecurity without any pragmatic approach.

Now that the unknown gunmen have killed two traditional rulers and injured others in Imo, the traditional rulers now realize that they should dialogue for the release of the leader of the outlawed IPOB group. (The Vanguard online news report).

Why would they wait until they were killed, suggesting that they were relaxed when other ordinary citizens were being killed? Let the Igbos wake up from slumber and look for a dark goat, because when the night comes, it might become impossible to see the black goat. Even though the activities of the unknown gunmen should be condemned by every well meaning Nigerian, they should therefore meet President Buhari, because making a statement is not enough, but a well coordinated dialogue will see the end of the South East unrest.
