With the construction of Anambra International Cargo Airport by Governor Willie Obiano to boost commercial activities in the state and South East in general, there are indications around the state that the State government under the watch of Obiano may likely push for the dredging of River Niger to enable small ships berth at Onitsha River Port to relief Anambra businessmen from going to Lagos State.
Though, the Cargo international airport will help businesses in South East region to progress, there is need to dredge and open up Onitsha Inland River Port.
People of Eastern region have been hoping to see the dredging of the River Niger to become a reality one day, just like the cargo international airport is gradually becoming a reality after years of waiting.
The plan to dredge the River Niger didn't start today, it actually started during colonial era, in 1950s but they colonial masters were busy preparing to handover the leadership of the country to Nigerian people, so they couldn't achieve the plan.
After Independence, successive governments didn't take the project serious at all, till the government of Umaru Musa Yar'Adua's administration came on board in 2007, and approved the contract for the dredging of River Niger, but he didn't live to achieve the project, and Goodluck Jonathan's led Federal Government paid lip-service to the project and nothing was done in the River till date.
