One of the major talking points in Nigerian political arena is how the new decision of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, that Northern politicians can still contest for President will be received by top Southern politicians in the party.

While it would be recalled that top PDP leaders from the South pushed for the North to get the post of PDP National Chairman to pave way for the South to get the presidential ticket, realities on ground show that that plan may not work out. In fact, with the manner the North produced a former Senate President, Iyorchia Ayu, as its consensus candidate, it is a clear handwriting on the wall that more surprises may come from that region as far as PDP affairs are concerned. This article will discuss ways the decision to allow Northerners to still contest for PDP's presidential ticket may affect the plan of Governor Nyesom Wike, Seyi Makinde, Godwin Obaseki and other key PDP leaders form the South who initially planned to allow the ticket to come to their region.

The new decision puts the North in great advantage in PDP. By this, it means that the North may have more control of PDP ahead of 2023 to decide who gets the ticket. This is because apart from getting the post of PDP National Chairman, the North stands equal chance or even better chance of getting more from PDP. Before now, the South had more control of PDP with Prince Uche Secondus as National Chairman. Secondus is from Rivers State Governed by Wike. He was also Wike's key ally who listens to him on key issues. It was Wike and former Governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose that heavily backed him to win the post. With that, Wike wields great influence in PDP. However, North has been given the post of National Chairman with Ayu set to resume after merging unopposed. Things will change for Wike and others.

Another former Senate President, David Mark is a frontline aspirant to replace Senator Walid Jibrin as PDP Board of Trustees Chairman. This means that the North may have more control of PDP which will help the region to get more favourable decisions from the party. In this regard, Wike, Makinde, Obaseki and others from the South may find it harder to push for what they want especially for the South to get the PDP presidential ticket in 2023.

Again, the North may even get the presidential ticket contrary to what Wike, Makinde, Obaseki and others planned to achieve. Earlier before yesterday, nobody believed that PDP will give the North a nod for politicians from the region to also contest for PDP's presidential ticket after producing the National Chairman. But, it later happened. As it stands now, the North boasts of many top and influential aspirants for President such as Atiku Abubakar, Bukola Saraki, Rabiu Kwankwaso, Aminu Tambuwal and many others who had contested for the post in 2019. With the kind of unity on their side, the fact the Chairman is from the North and the sudden twist that PDP allowed the region to contest, the North may surprise Wike and others to also win the PDP presidential ticket.
