Opinion: Two Mistakes Makinde Should Avoid After PDP Congress

There are at least two mistakes that Seyi Makinde needs to avoid after the PDP congress held on Monday in the Osun State capital, Osogbo. The Oyo State governor needs to be more careful at this time more than ever.

The election was keenly contested between Alhaji Taofeek Arapaja, who was a deputy governor in Oyo State and a former ambassador to Jordan, and Mr. Eddy Olafeso, who used to be the national vice chairman of the PDP (southwest).

Eventually, Taofeek Arapaja emerged and he was elected as the main head of the PDP in the southwest geopolitical zone. Though he has the victory, the margin between him and his opponent, Arapaja, was very low and totally negligible.

Seyi Makinde shouldn't see himself as the boss right now just because his candidate won the election. It is good for him to have some feelings that he is on top of the party. Actually, he is the only PDP governor in the region.

Makinde needs to be very careful in his dealings within the party. He should remember that power is transient, hence, he shouldn't try to abuse the power given to him. Prior the poll, he had some issues with the former Ekiti State governor Ayodele Fayose.

Fayose backed Eddy Olafeso. He had his reasons for doing that. And Fayose can't be blamed or mocked for following up his interest. That his candidate lost doesn't mean he doesn't have power in the PDP anymore. He remains influential and Makinde must know this.

In a nutshell, Makinde shouldn't see himself as far above other politicians in the region just because of the election.

The second mistake he needs to avoid is that he shouldn't use Taofeek Arapaja as a tool for imposition. One thing that kills a party faster is imposition of candidates.

There will be elections in Osun and Ekiti State next year. Makinde will have his preferred candidates for the elections. But he shouldn't in any way ask Arapaja to impose candidates on the party.

The Oyo State governor should allow a level play ground for all and sundry so that the political party can move forward and reclaim its glory from the All Progresives Congress that virtually dominates the region.
