How Governor Wike Plans to Emerge as PDP's Vice Presidential Candidate in the 2023 Election

The People Democratic Party may have crossed a crucial milestone in the race for the 2023 presidential election following the ratification of its zoning committee report. The report recommended a Northern national party chairman. This has led to the emergence of Iyiorcha Ayu as consensus chairman.

As a follow-up to this, there are reports that PDP leaders may have agreed to throw the presidential ticket race open, in an apparent effort to appease the Northern power brokers in the party.

Meanwhile, the River State Governor has all the while been quietly implementing a strategic plot that will see him emerge as PDP's Vice Presidential candidate in 2023. This was allegedly revealed by one of his senior aides to The Whistler newspaper.

In this report, I will analyse some of the strategic steps that Wike has taken to help him emerge as a running mate in the 2023 election.

He is planning to float a joint presidential ticket with Governor Tambuwal

It is not a secret that Wike has a very close relationship with Aminu Tambuwal. Their closeness was underscored by the support the Sokoto State Governor received from his River State counterpart during his 2019 presidential race. Though Tambuwal lost to Atiku in the PDP primaries, Wike stood by him till the end.

Wike is set to reproduce that relationship again as he is said to be working on a plan to float a joint presidential ticket with Tambuwal. Tambuwal is expected to head the ticket while Wike will be the running mate.

This is expected to be a strong partnership because it is a collaboration between two of the strongest politicians in PDP. More so, it is a strategic partnership because while Wike is strong and influential in the South, Tambuwal is also influential in the North. So, it will not be difficult to market the ticket whether in the North or South.

Wike's quest to float a joint ticket with Tambuwal is allegedly one of the reasons why he fell out with former PDP National Chairman, Prince Uche Secondus. The conflict eventually led to the premature exit of Secondus as PDP chairman.

And with Ayu’s emergence as the consensus chairman, Wike’s plan is said to be in full swing because he was very instrumental in the plan to make Ayu become PDP chairman.

However, one of the major challenges with this idea is Atiku who is also a strong contender in the PDP president ticket race. The former Vice President may stand in the way of Tambuwal and Wike winning the PDP ticket because he is a very influential politician in the PDP.

More so, Atiku has invaluable presidential campaign experience and he has a structure that has been tested several times.

The experience that he has garnered from taking part in no less than three presidential campaigns can help him defeat Tambuwal in the primaries and probably end Wike's hopes of emerging a running mate.
