Bakare, who made this known during a chat with ThisDay, said anyone who wants to lead Nigeria beyond 2023 must negotiate with the political elites in the Northern region, adding that they have a way of 'giving you the crown but holding the sceptre'.
The former vice-presidential aspirant also insisted that for such a situation to change, there must be a complete overhaul of the country's constitution.
"The way our country is constituted right now, no matter who wants to lead this country; anyone that wants to lead this country right now will have to negotiate with the north and the north has a way of giving you the crown and holding the sceptre and if that's going to change, then our glorified death certificate called the Nigerian constitution must have to go through a rejig.
I honestly will say, almost all things that were going for the north in the days of Ahmadu Bello are no longer there. The textile industries where they dominated are not there anymore. The groundnut pyramids and so on. And what they have is what they hold. They have power.
Nigeria has structured in such a way that no section wins an election by itself. The southerner cannot win the election without reaching out to the south and a northerner cannot win an election without reaching out to the south," he said.
Bakare also disclosed that one of the major challenges Muhammadu Buhari has faced in the past 6 years of his tenure was poor health, adding that it is a miracle that the President is still alive today.
Recall that the clergyman, who had severely criticized the present administration in the past few months, was recently invited to the Presidential Villa by Muhammadu Buhari for a closed-door meeting.
